As the most rewarding trek in the Everest region, the Everest Three High Passes Trek certainly deserves a spot in Nepal's 20 top-ranked best treks! This breathtaking, adventurous trek takes you in a counter-clockwise direction throughout the Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp! The hardest part of the trek is facing the famous three high passes such as Kongma La (5,550 m/18208.66), Cho La (5,420 m/17,782 ft), and Renjo La (5,340 m/17,520 ft), and avoiding altitude sickness. The highest of them is the Kongma La Pass, and it is also the most rewarding one! Acting as a bridge between the Everest region's eastern and western areas, this mountain pass allows access from Everest Base Camp to the Gokyo glacial lakes; the final scenic mountain crossing, Renjo La, then descends Lukla via the old salt trading route Lunde.

Since the Everest Three High Passes Trek is not mountain climbing, you do not need a technical course or previous experience. However, before visiting Nepal, we recommend trekking, hiking, running with a backpack, gym cardio, etc. For more details, please do not hesitate to drop us a few lines. This Everest Three Passes trek can also be done in a clockwise direction, but it becomes more strenuous.

While it may appear to be similar to the difficult Everest Three High Passes Trek, indeed it is not. However, Nepal Trekking Experts strongly advise some trekking and hiking practice with a backpack for a couple of months before visiting Nepal and trekking during the peak season, which runs from September to November and March to May. The Cho La Pass, at 5,420 meters, adds value to our journey as we cross from east to west and reach the natural paradise of Gokyo Valley.

The Manaslu Region

Home to the eighth tallest mountain in the world and only opened in 1991, the Manaslu region is one of Nepal’s last trekking frontiers. Due to being classified as a restricted zone, the Manaslu region offers a unique trekking experience in the wilderness of Nepal. The entire area is like a hidden valley bordering Tibet; we have picked the most demanding, less explored off-the-beaten-path trekking routes, such as Manaslu Circuit Trek and Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, in our 20 top-ranked treks in Nepal.

Its most prominent landmarks are the incredible views of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters, 26,781 feet), the Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters, 16, 751 feet), and the mystic monasteries of Mu Gompa, Gompa Lungdang,Dhephu Doma, and many more! Since the Manaslu region is a restricted area of Nepal, those who prefer to trek in such a region are extremely prohibited from trekking solo and have to go through a government-registered Nepalese trekking agency such as Nepal Trekking Experts and a local guide. The Manaslu region is close to the Tibetan border and has a harmonious mixture of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. While trekking in the Manaslu region, numerous Buddhist stupas, monasteries, prayer wheels, and flags filled the valley and could be explored. Besides the culture, the landscape scenes and pristine flora and fauna are pretty breathtaking in Manaslu. The entire valley has been largely untouched by human intervention, offering trekkers an off-the-beaten-path experience and seeing virgin nature at its best!

With its western part bordering the more popular Annapurna region, and since we already have an Annapurna Conservation Area trekking permit, combining the Manaslu circuit with a classical Annapurna circuit trek may add extra value to your journey.

Likewise, it is equally famous for the sunrise trek as well. But you can also visit the Holy Hindu Khayar Lake for an even better experience. Another significant part of the Khopra Danda trek is a visit to Tatopani. Tatopani means "hot water, and it is situated on the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. Perfect for relaxing and soaking any of those sore muscles at the end of the trek! From here on, it’s a short drive back to Pokhara and ultimately back to Kathmandu.

Head off the beaten path and emerge yourself within the Nepalese Himalayas with the Khopra Danda Trek for at least a few days of your life—you will never regret choosing it. The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek can be made longer and combined with other famous treks, such as the Annapurna Base Camp, Khopra Danda Trek, and Mardi Himal trek. The short and easy-graded trek takes you to the highest point of the entire trek, Poon Hill (3210 m/10532 ft) above sea level, within 3/4 days from Pokhara Valley. The trek is a perfect destination for inexperienced trekkers, families, solo travelers, more prominent groups, and everyone else to taste the raw beauty and test their stamina while hiking in Nepal. It is doable in all four seasons. However, we do not recommend June, July, or August unless you do not have another choice due to the rainy season in Nepal. If you prefer fewer tourists, less commercialization, and a blue sky every day, then you may consider December/January and February, which are known as winter in Nepal. However, please do not forget that those spring months, such as March, April, and May, are the best time to explore the national flower of Nepal, the blooming rhododendron.

The most popular viewpoint in the lower foothills of the Annapurna region, Poon Hill, offers an amazing sunrise and sunset along with spectacular
sceneries of Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167 m/26,795 ft.), Mt Annapurna I (8,091 m), Mt Annapurna South (7,219 m/23,684 ft.), Mt Nilgiri (7,061 m/23,166 ft), Mt Fishtail, and many more graceful vistas!

Langtang Region (Langtang National Park)

The third most popular Nepal trekking region and national park is none other than Langtang National Park, located north of Kathmandu Valley and touching the Tibetan border.

The entire Langtang Valley is like a grassy plain filled with hills and mountains. Despite the 2015 earthquake, the valley has been rebuilt, and the locals are receiving trekkers again. A big part of the valley is inhabited by the strong and hospitable Tamang people, who have been living here for centuries! There are quite a few prominent landmarks in this region. The sacred Gosaikunda Lake, at a height of 4,380 meters (14,370 feet), is where, according to legend, the Hindu god Shiva made his residence. The Kyanjin Gompa (3,830 m/12,566 ft) serves as an important pilgrimage site and produces sublime yak cheese, and both peaks of Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m/15,528 ft) and Tserko Ri (4,984 m/16,352 ft) offer amazing views of the 360-degree Himalayas, such as:

Off-The-Beaten-Path-Treks

Nepal, the adventure capital of the world, has a plethora of hidden valleys, isolated landscapes, and remote wilderness trekking routes that are known as off-the-beaten-path treks. These treks are not necessarily the most difficult or high passes or high Himalayan, but they are definitely more unique trekking routes than classics like the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, Langtang Valley, etc., which hold a special place in the hearts of many adventure enthusiasts from around the planet. Some of these treks require camping instead of overnighting at a teahouse or guesthouse. Nevertheless, these off-the-beaten-path treks offer you a unique adventure through the Nepalese Himalayas and should be done at least once if you’re looking for a pure experience!

To achieve the best overall trekking experience, these off-the-beaten-path treks are best done in the spring (March, April, and May) and fall (September, October, and November), as are most treks in Nepal. Similarly, there are "rain shadow zones" on specific trekking routes (such as Upper Mustang, Nar Phu Valley, Upper Dolpo, etc.) that you can hike in the summer (June, July, and August). Because the majority of these treks take place in a restricted area, you must get restricted area special permits through a government-approved local agency like Nepal Trekking Experts with a local guide and a minimum of two trekkers in a group. Without further ado, here are the final Off-The-Beaten-Path treks recommended by Nepal Trekking Experts from their list of the 20 Top Best Treks in Nepal.

  • Visit the amazing glacial Shey Phoksundo Lake.
  • Explore the pristine Shey Phoksundo National Park and the unique flora and fauna.
  • Enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan views along with ancient monasteries.

The Upper Dolpo Trek, located on the old salt trade route between Nepal and Tibet, is truly one of the best off-the-beaten-path treks! Follow an old route through a Buddhist-Tibetan-influenced region up to the famous Shey Phoksundo Lake (and visit the legendary Shey Gompa). All while passing through three mountain passes Nagdalo La (5,350 m/17,553 ft), Shey La (5,010 m/16,437 ft), and Jeng La (5,220 m/17,126 ft).

From Dunai, our actual hiking adventure begins towards the most beautiful and breathtaking Shey Phoksundo Lake, where you can enjoy the stunning white Himalayas reflected in the lake. The trails cross several rivers, streams, stupas, Mani walls, and monasteries, and ascend and descend narrow trails lined with rocks and steep cliffs. Of course, we recommend spending an extra day exploring this naturally beautiful paradise and properly acclimatizing it for our upcoming trek. You can travel to Tshowa, a +900-year-old Buddhist monastery on the shores of Phoksundo, after spending the night in Rigmo village. We will have to make our way to the mystical Shey Gompa.

Further, at 5350 m, we reach the challenging Nagdalo Pass. As we descend from the pass, we reach Shey Gompa, a red-colored monastery that has withstood the elements and time for over 800 years! The preserved Shey Phoksundo National Park and the homeland of Buddhism offer numerous traditional monasteries and stupas. Ultimately, we descend back to Dunai to get back to Kathmandu. • Less explored and less crowded off-the-beaten-path treks in the Annapurna Conservation Area

Even though the trail was formally inaugurated in 1992, the Upper Mustang Trek trails are still less popular than other of the more well-known treks. Fewer people will attend such an off-the-beaten-path trek due to its being located in a restricted area that requires a minimum of two people to trek and at least $500 per person for the first ten days of a trekking permit.

The Upper Mustang Trek begins from Jomsom and can be reached by plane after a stop in Pokhara or by a drive that takes 8–9 hours. Located at the foothills of Mt. Nilgiri and the bank of the Kaligandaki River, Kagbeni is a gateway to the Upper Mustang Trek. During the hike, we passed by a famous meditation cave where the famous Guru Rinpoche meditated on the way. We continue, paying our respects and praying for a safe journey, as well as crossing a series of mountain passes in the coming days that will lead us into the Mustang Valley and the lost kingdom of Lo! The Taklam La 3624m is the highest pass, followed by the Yamda La 3850m and the Nyi La 4010m. We encountered the longest Mani Wall in all of Asia, chortens, centuries-old monasteries, and king palaces. People love to visit this trek during one of the biggest Tiji festivals, which runs for three days and is held in May. Apart from the high season in spring and fall, the trek can be done in the summer as well.

Filled with adventure at every step, this is one of Nepal’s last off-the-beaten-path treks, where you’ll be trekking through the practically untouched wilderness into the Himalayas!

Having only opened in 1988, the trails remain practically virgin and can offer a challenge to traverse. With less human influence, flora and fauna are abundant. The challenging Kang La Pass (5360 m/17585 ft.) and an unforgettable Annapurna Himalayas view from the pass's summit

Have you heard of Nepal's Nar Phu Valley Trek? It's not surprising that many people haven't heard about it yet. The recently discovered hidden valley of Nar Phu is part of the classic Annapurna Conservation Area, which extends from Kathmandu to Jagat via Besisahar. The classic trail continues until Koto, where it diverges to the north and continues through the massive gorge to the wilderness. I've done almost every trek in Nepal, and this is one of my favorites because it has such raw beauty and transports you back in time.

The Nar Phu Valley trek, which borders Tibet, has a strong Buddhist influence, giving you the rare opportunity to visit remote and secluded monasteries, Mani walls, and stupas made of mud, ruck, and wood! Furthermore, because this is a new trekking route that opened in AD 2002, the trails are relatively virgin and provide a more authentic Himalayan experience. The village itself dates from the 5th century and is made up of stone houses that lead upward. You can hike up to Mt. Himlung's Base Camp from Phu, which serves as the main entry point for climbing Mt. Himlung (7,126 m/23,379 ft). Don't forget to pay a visit to the Tashi Lakhang Monastery, which is one of the 108 Greatest Buddhist Monasteries in the World!

The trek continues to Nar Phedi, where you can stay in a monastery if you wish or in the hillside village of Nar. Nar village is quite large, interesting, and scenic. If you enjoy fewer tourists, less development, untouched landscapes, deep Tibetan culture, and challenging passes, please do not miss it. However, if you are looking for fancy meals and accommodations like those in Annapurna and Everest, Wi-Fi, phone reception, hot showers, apple pie, and easy hiking, this may not be the best option. Furthermore, the preserved culture and views are breathtaking!
