Three Passes Trek -- Amazing Adventure!

I completed the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Experts during late April/early May 2024. I was solo with a guide (Basanta) and a porter (Tularam). The entire experience, from the first contact with the agency to the last day flying out of Kathmandu, went wonderfully well. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

More details on my experience below:

    **Before the trek**
    - The first time I messaged Nepal Trekking Experts (NTE) to inquire about the trek, I got a reply within a few hours from Rajesh. In the next weeks and months, this response speed was consistent. This made me feel good about planning since back & forths were so short, taking hours as opposed to days. It allowed my 100s of questions to be answered quickly.
    - When it came to the logistics of the trek, NTE was flexible and willing to adapt the package to my requests including switching hotels in Kathmandu, transport via helicopter instead of plane to Lukhla, and upgrading accommodation on the trail.
    - Once I arrived in Kathmandu, I met Rajesh at their offices. He did a thorough check of my gear, introduced me to Basanta (who I would be guided by) and briefed me on the journey ahead in detail. Once again, patiently answering my many questions. He even offered to go to gear shops with me to help me pick the remaining items I needed to get (which I ended up doing with Rabin, thank you Rabin!).

    **During the trek**
    - We stayed in comfortable lodges at nearly every village on our itinerary, making the challenge easier to complete.
    - Our itinerary was flexible, for example a few days after starting we added an extra day of acclimatization in Dingboche at my request.
    - Throughout the hike, I felt safe and cared for with Basanta as my guide. He regularly checked if I needed anything to eat or drink, but also gave me as much space as I needed — walking separately from me, giving me extra time in the mornings when I needed it, and more generally engaging only as much as I’d like to.
Any problem I had, Basanta was quick to help me fix; need more medicine, need to buy new shoes, need to get another pack of wipes -- let Basanta know and he’ll make sure we get it done! The cherry on top of the cake was at the end of the journey when Basanta organized a last-minute helicopter back to Kathmandu, at a time where it was difficult to do so because of high demand due to bad weather.
    - On a technical level, Basanta had done the Three Passes Trek many times already (22x) and had experience climbing as well which could come in handy in unusual cases of snow or ice. This meant he knew exactly where we needed to go, and was ready for most of the eventualities thrown at us on the way.
    - On a personal level, Basanta speaks great English which allowed for a deeper connection between us. Most people we met assumed we were 2 friends hiking together, as opposed to a guide and his client.
    - In short, Basanta was an outstanding guide. This was thought not only by me, but by every trekker we met on the way who spent time with us. I got asked many times how I found NTE, and how I came to be guided by Basanta. If you get a chance to work with Basanta, don’t think twice :)
    - As for Tularam, the man carried my bag throughout the trek with a huge smile on his face. Always punctual and always seemingly happy to be here. While we didn’t get to talk as much given the language barrier (Basanta was our translator), I appreciated a lot his positive energy and his hard work.

As the days went by, the three of us (Basanta, Tularam and I) ended up as a little team, walking around the Sagarmatha National Park going over high passes, meeting other trekkers and bonding at night over all sorts of card games. It was a special time, and a great adventure. I left Kathmandu thankful for it, thankful for everyone involved in making it happen, and thankful for such beautiful landscapes to exist for us to witness. I’ll definitely be coming back soon for another adventure.

    Thank you!!

    Great organisation, superb guide

The team at Nepal Trekking Experts were fantastic from start to finish. Before departure, it was clear what I would need to bring; and then, from the moment of being met at the airport (at 1:30am, 80 minutes later than expected), Rajesh smoothly organised permits, a very experienced guide (Kedar) and a most capable porter. Kedar's flexibility with our schedule based on weather and capability was masterful. I look forward to recommending NTE to my friends with confidence.

    Look No Further

I can’t praise Nepal Trekking Experts enough for their above and beyond service! From the moment we inquired about a possible trek in Nepal, Rajesh was incredibly responsive, helpful, and accommodating. Upon arriving to Kathmandu from the US, we were promptly met at the airport and dropped off at lovely accommodations. The trip continued to follow suit, prompt and organized yet always laidback. We had the best guide, Dinesh Rai - he encouraged, eased anxieties, was very knowledgeable about the trek, and very personable. Our porters Chhwang & Ram were incredibly humble, helpful and always keeping an eye out for us. I felt incredibly cared for and at home with our Nepal Trekking Experts team and would absolutely 100% book another trek with them again!! Look no further, you’ve found Nepal’s best!

Great trek, great guide and company

Beautiful trek through different climatic zones and remote villages including experience of Tibetan culture - from below the tree line up to the pass at 5200m. There weren’t too many others doing the hike and the villages remain quite traditional (with very few facilities). Accommodation was clean basic twin rooms. Arjun was a very good guide with good english - really enhanced the experience - and Rajesh was a good communicator and was very helpful. Thoroughly recommend the trek (before they build a road through the valley); as well as Nepal Trekking Experts.

We chose Nepal Trekking Experts for the second time to complete the Three High Passes Trek and Everest Base Camp.
It was a truly amazing experience.

    Phenomenal Manaslu Trek!

We had an incredible experience trekking the Manaslu Circuit with Nepal Trekking Experts. Rajesh stands out as the most organized and helpful tour operator I've ever encountered. He responded to our questions via WhatsApp almost instantly, regardless of the time of day. Our guide, Binod, was excellent, humorous, and possessed unparalleled knowledge of the Manaslu region. He ensured that our trek was both memorable and stress-free. Supporting Binod was assistant guide Santos, as well as two friendly porters who further enhanced our trekking experience. It was truly an unforgettable time in the beautiful Manaslu region. I highly recommend Nepal Trekking Experts for anyone considering a trek in Nepal. I am certain to organize my next trek with them!

The best trekking company in Nepal

I did the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Nepal Trekking Experts (NTE) in April. If you looking for the best company and experience in Nepal please, look no further! I did an extensive search before my arrival as it was my first visit to Nepal ( so now you don’t have to :-) and NTE surpassed all my expectations. The website provides detailed and accurate information about everything starting from the itinerary, map and elevation, all costs, transportation and even the trekking gear checklist. If you still have any more questions ( like I did ), Rajesh in the office is very prompt in responding and always ready to answer any questions you may have. Once you start communication you will be instantly at ease as it’s clear from the start he speaks from experience and you will know you’re in good hands. I joined the group as a solo traveller and had the best experience ever. As I did not have any puffer jacket or sleeping bag I appreciated NTE helping me rent a puffer jacket and sleeping bag out just for the duration of the trek. Everything about this trip exceeded my expectations. Ram, Santos and Shiva looked after us during our trip. They were incredibly hospitable, warm-hearted, attentive, smiley, and enthusiastic, and their immense knowledge of culture, history and nature enriched my personal experience. Ram paid attention to all the small details that make a difference to ensure we had the best possible experience every day ( inc. diet, medical, gear etc.). Every day of our trek was amazing and the next day was even better. I was in Nepal for a month already before I trekked, so I could compare the trekking experience of all the people I met with their trekking operators/guides and the professional level, customer care and services provided by NTE are unmatched. I will be booking another trek with NTE when I come back to Nepal next year . Thank you, Rajesh, Ram, Santos and Shiva!

The best trekking company in Nepal

My GF and I just finished the Manaslu Circuit trek with Nepal Trekking Experts (NTE) and can not recommend them enough. Request Ram (guide), Santos (guide/porter) & Shiva (porter). If you are deciding between the many trekking companies out there, go with NTE. They are a locally founded & operated company. From start to finish, everything about the trip exceed our expectations. Here is a bit about our experience:

Inquiry, booking & arrival: We were recommended NTE by a friend who connected us with Raj. Corresponding and booking with Raj was very easy, all done over WhatsApp. When we arrived in Kathmandu, NTE had someone waiting for us at the airport just outside the gate to bring us to the hotel for the first night before the trek. Because our group was 6, Raj recommended we take a private jeep to the start of the trek vs. the public bus. The jeep was a far nicer experience than the bus and probably saved us 3-4+ hours of driving time. Highly recommend doing this if it’s offered.

Guides/porters: Spending time with Ram, Santos & Shiva was one of the highlights of the trip. From a guiding perspective, they handled all of the logistics (booking transport, housing, adjusting schedules for weather, etc.) in expert fashion allowing all of the customers to just enjoy the trek. They were all extremely knowledgable about the region & Nepal. All 3 (and all of NTE as I understand it) are from the Manaslu region so have intimate knowledge of the area, seem to know everyone! and know the little details that make a big difference. Because of this we were always booked in the best guest houses (best views & best food) and in the best rooms, and we were always treated very warmly by the guest house owners.

Just as importantly, they were just really great people to spend 2 weeks with. It felt like we were trekking with friends (who also happened to do all of the logistics/work every day). We would often be the last ones in the dining hall each evening playing cards and enjoying tea. You meet many other groups from different companies during the trek, our entire group felt like we were extremely fortunate to be with Ram, Santos & Shiva.

Note on porters: We did not plan to hire a porter for the trip as we normally will carry our own things. We ended up splitting the cost of a porter with another couple from the group who asked to on briefing day and were glad that we did. It was nice to have a bit of a lighter load to better enjoy the hiking & scenery and it was worth it just to have Santos/Shiva as part of our team.

Trek: The scenery and trek are awe inspiring. The scale of things in the Himalayas is just different from other places in the world. The itinerary with NTE is very well planned to ensure everyone adjusts to the increasing altitudes. There are multiple acclimatization days where you will hike high and sleep lower to prepare for going over Lakre Pass (17k+ ft). One of the highlights of the trip was our visit to Pungen Gompa which is a high altitude Monastary with incredible views of Mt Manaslu and surrounding peaks. Many of the groups we met who were trekking with other companies didn’t have Pungen Gompa included in their itinerary, another reason NTE was excellent.

We were fortunate to have a personal recommendation to use NTE as it can be a bit overwhelming trying to sort through all of the trekking companies online. Consider this your personal recommendation, you cannot do better than Nepal trekking experts & request Ram/Santos & Shiva if you can!
